How much should I feed my pet?

Feeding guidelines are provided for each of our products and indicate the estimated amount to feed per day. The feeding guidelines are based on the guidelines set by nutritional and veterinary experts, but the guidelines are average feeding guidelines based on average dogs. Just as eating amounts vary from person to person, eating amounts vary from pet to pet. Depending on amongst others age, body condition, gender, activity level and breed, the actual feeding amount can differ from the feeding guidelines.

The feeding guide is intended only as a starting point. It's critical to your pet's health that his or her physical condition is monitored regularly and the feeding amount is adjusted as needed. We recommend dividing the recommended amount into two or three meals per day. For puppies in their first growing phase, the recommended amount of food should be divided into at least three meals per day.

Fresh meat and barf feeding?

Barf feeding has become very fashionable. What is the scientific opinion of universities? Is it a good idea to feed barf? Is it best to feed the dog with barf (fresh meat) or scientifically produced and extruded pet food?

Most meat samples contain pathogenic bacteria. As you can see in the table below, 81% of turkey, 69% of pork, 55% of beef and 39% of chicken samples are contaminated with enterococcus. Salmonella can also be present. It is really a risk to give to your dog uncooked animal products.

Most vets discourage the use of barf. Even if it is hype, there have been studies that have illustrated that a lot of intoxications in dogs are due to barf feeding. Such contamination can also be transmitted to humans, as raw food is often handled in the kitchen in the home near human food.

This is also the official opinion of most veterinary institutes. You can check the results of a scientific study “Current knowledge about the risk and benefits of raw meat-based diets for dogs and cats”. This is a study by Dr. Freeman, and his conclusion was that it is not a good idea to give uncooked meat to dogs and cats, because of a high risk of contamination with bacteria. Frequently, barf feeding is not nutritionally equilibrated. Also, Veterinary Institutes at AVMA in United States and the AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) discourage the use of barf feeding.

Good heat treatment during production is one of the best methods to guarantee the absence of pathogenic bacteria.
